BULLET JOURNAL: GETTING ORGANIZED AT THE START OF THE YEAR

Do you love DIY projects and arts and crafts? This year, why not try creating a bullet journal? First imagined by Ryder Carroll, the bullet journal is a method of personal organization which combines note-taking, a calendar and journal in one single notebook.

Whether you're a fan of to-do lists or are simply curious about discovering a new method of organization, your bullet journal will become an essential aid in your daily routine, with your goals, appointments and most colorful ideas kept within its pages. Make organization rhyme with creation and start your bullet journal today with this step-by-step guide from Caran d’Ache.

WHY USE A BULLET JOURNAL?

A bullet journal, or “bujo” for short, helps you organize and track various aspects of your everyday life. As a method of organization which has gained many followers, bullet journaling combines a journal, a planner (with weekly, monthly and annual calendars) and a task tracker all brought together in one personalized notebook. Using simple symbols and lists, your bullet journal helps you manage your daily tasks, goals, events, monthly schedule, notes and much more. This method will help you prioritize, stay organized and track your progress in a creative and efficient way.

More than just a method of organization, journaling is also therapeutic. Organizing your thoughts and planning your daily life with your bullet journal will help reduce stress.

SUPPLIES YOU'LL NEED WHEN CREATING A BULLET JOURNAL

Starting a bullet journal does not necessarily require many supplies other than a notebook and a pen. Choose your supplies according to your wishes and the methods that suit you best when it comes to personalizing your bullet journal (drawings, collages, calligraphy, watercolor…). Here is a list of basic supplies to consider when starting your bujo:

• A notebook. Choose a notebook with blank, dotted, or lined pages depending on how you prefer to organize your pages and ideas. Make sure the paper is thick enough to avoid ink going through the page.

The COLORMAT-X A5 notebook by Caran d’Ache is ideal for bullet journaling. With 120 white lined pages and stiff cover the COLORMAT-X is perfect for both drawing and writing. Available in nine colors, find the one that is perfect for you!

• Writing instruments.
• Coloring pencils or crayons to liven up your bujo.
• Stickers and Washi tape to personalize your bullet journal.
• A bookmark.

ORGANIZING YOUR BULLET JOURNAL

1. Index page

The index allows you to structure your bullet journal. Placed at the beginning of the notebook the index allows you to see the contents of your journal and easily find what you’re looking for. The first step is to number every page of your journal. Then every time you create a new page (monthly calendar, daily log, notes, etc.) you can list the page number and title in the index. For example, if you start your January log on page 8, add “January log – p. 8” in the index.

2. Key page

The key page should come right after the index and is at the heart of your unique, personalized bullet journal. It keeps track of all the symbols you use to categorize your pages. For example, a dot can represent a task, a circle an event, or a dash a note. You can also define symbols for your task’s status, like a cross for a finished task or an arrow for a postponed one. This page is a quick reference guide to the meaning of each symbol.

3. Future log or calendex pages

The calendex, or future log, is the long-term overview in the bullet journal where you’ll find the events, birthdays and deadlines coming up in the following months. Organize these pages like a yearly calendar and write down all the important events at the relevant dates. This section is relatively flexible: you can focus on planning the next three months, six months or even year.

4. Monthly log page

Adding a monthly log will give you an overview of the month, with more detail than in the future log. These pages can include events, tasks that don't have any specific deadline, monthly goals or even a habit tracker. The aim is to get an overview of the month’s tasks and events thanks to a calendar or list over one or two pages, and think about your priorities.

5. Daily log page

Daily log pages allow you to plan and track your tasks on a daily basis. Start by writing the date then add the day’s tasks, events or important reminders. At the end of the day, you can review what you’ve achieved and postpone unfinished tasks. These pages allow you to adapt and organize your schedule day-to-day.

6. Collections pages

Collections are pages dedicated to specific projects or topics. They can include tracking lists (like habit trackers), or projects such as event planning or organizing a trip. Each collection is unique and customizable according to your needs. Other examples include a collection to organize a move, with a llst of tasks, dates and notes, or a collection listing the books you’re reading etc.

7. Weekly log pages

These were not included in the bullet journal’s original design, but weekly log pages can prove useful when it comes to planning and getting an overview of your week. Add important tasks, the week’s events in the calendar and list weekly goals. The weekly log pages are useful for those who are seeking a balance between the details of the daily log pages and the more general overview of the monthly ones.
