This new collaboration with Paul Smith was therefore a challenge to our Brand. To bring the designer's creative ambition to fruition, Caran d'Ache has applied 12 new colours to the iconic hexagonal aluminium body of the 849 ballpoint pen. The metal boxes that accompany these beautiful pens also have their bicolour adornment.

To achieve this unique bicolour design, we first lacquered one colour over the entire body of the ballpoint pen in several layers. We then employed the pad printing process, which is also used for other writing instruments.

And because luxury is in the attention to detail: each 849 ballpoint pen bears a gold “Caran d'Ache + Paul Smith” inscription. Each reusable metal box also bears the same golden inscription.
