The Caran d'Ache mechanical pencil: innovative since 1929

The first mechanical pencils appeared at the end of the 19th century. But it was in 1929 that Caran d'Ache patented the legendary Fixpencil : the first mechanical pencil with a clutch. With the touch of a button, the clutch releases so that the lead can slide out. This mechanism, invented by Geneva engineer Carl Schmid, is still in use today.
