From the ocean to the page: Caran d'Ache felt-tip pens are tracing a more responsible future

Creating, drawing, writing: these simple activities help to shape the imagination and accompany all forms of creativity. In this day and age, they also make us rethink how creative tools are designed.

Behind every felt-tip pen lies a material, know-how, and manufacturing choices. In 2026, Caran d'Ache is changing those of its Fibralo™ felt-tip pens, with particular focus on the provenance of the materials that are central to the creative process. This evolution has been made possible thanks to a partnership with Tide Ocean, a Swiss supplier specialising in the transformation of ocean-bound plastics into high-quality raw materials.

FIBRALO™ BRUSH: FELT-TIP PENS DESIGNED FOR CREATIVE FREEDOM

Since their creation, Fibralo™ and Fibralo™ Brush felt-tip pens have been used for a wide variety of creative activities. They were designed with a clear goal in mind: offer reliable tools that are pleasant to use and suitable for all types of strokes, from the most precise to the most free-flowing.

Fibralo™ Brush pens illustrate this approach through:

• a flexible and resistant brush tip, that can draw fine lines as well as larger areas of color;

• water-soluble ink, which allows for transparency, gradients, and watercolor effects;

• a grip designed for comfort and consistency over time.

Available in 30 vibrant colors and sold individually, in boxes, or in themed sets, Fibralo™ Brush felt-tipped pens adapt to everyone's desires, techniques, and creative universes. A palette designed to explore, experiment, and create freely, without constraints.

These high standards applied to drawing and writing now extend to the very materials used to make the felt-tip pens, with the ambition to update the manufacturing process without altering the creative experience.

TIDE OCEAN: TRANSFORMING OCEAN-BOUND PLASTICS INTO SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

To support the evolution of Fibralo™ and Fibralo™ Brush felt-tip pens, Caran d'Ache has partnered with Tide Ocean, a Swiss company that has developed a committed approach to fight plastic pollution.

#tide® tackles the issue at its root, where the impact is real, by collecting ocean-bound plastic waste: plastic that would end up in the ocean if not recovered in time.

This waste is then:

collected from local communities,

sorted and recycled,

transformed into a high-quality raw material suitable for demanding uses.

This recycled material can be used to make sustainable objects while reducing the use of virgin plastic. It is part of a circular approach, where waste becomes a resource, without compromising on reliability or quality.

By choosing Tide Ocean, Caran d'Ache is relying on a partner that combines innovation, measurable environmental impact, and industrial demands to make its creative tools more responsible.

2026: A NEW MILESTONE FOR CARAN D'ACHE'S FELT-TIP PEN RANGES

From April 1st, 2026, all Caran d'Ache Fibralo™ felt-tip pens will be manufactured using only recycled plastic sourced from ocean-bound waste collected before it reaches the sea. The bodies and caps are now made from this material, with no virgin plastic added.

This change affects all our Fibralo™ and Fibralo™ Brush felt-tip pens. It is part of a global approach aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of our products, while maintaining the standards of quality, durability, and comfort of use that define Caran d'Ache.

CREATING TODAY, THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW

Creating, drawing, and writing are timeless activities. By adapting the materials used in its felt-tip pens, Caran d'Ache has chosen to make these activities more responsible, mindful of their impact and focused on the future.

This evolution, made possible thanks to a partnership with Tide Ocean, illustrates a simple belief: innovation only makes sense if it is accompanied by a commitment to sustainability. Without changing the creative experience, this new step extends the company's commitment to designing reliable tools that are built to last and change with the times.

A way of supporting today's creativity while taking part in the challenges of tomorrow.

Yes. From April 1st, 2026, all Fibralo™ and Fibralo™ Brush felt-tip pens will be made from recycled plastic sourced from ocean-bound waste.

Other Caran d'Ache Swisscolor and Maxi felt-tip pens will also gradually undergo the same manufacturing process.

What is Tide Ocean?

What does “ocean-bound” mean?

It refers to plastic located in high-risk areas that is destined to end up in the ocean if not collected in time. Recovering it makes it possible to take action before marine pollution occurs.

Where is the plastic used by Tide collected?

The plastic is collected in coastal areas and at-risk regions before it reaches the ocean, in collaboration with local communities.

What impact does this change have at the Caran d'Ache level?

The switch to the material developed by #tide® avoids the use of approximately 18.5 tons of virgin plastic each year and reduces CO₂ emissions by 16.65 tons for the Fibralo™ and Fibralo™ Brush ranges.
