Caran d’Ache celebrates its Geneva heritage through two writing instruments where the Maison’s expertise meets the poetry of Toile de Jouy. Geneva, the brand’s birthplace and an enduring source of inspiration, is revealed through the intricacies of the design. Drawn by hand, gardens, architecture and iconic landmarks come together to form a delicate and evocative map, expressing the Maison’s deep attachment to its roots.
A Toile de Jouy where every detail tells the story of Geneva, interpreted through a Prestige Edition and a Limited Edition.
A beautiful object is one that moves us and stays with us. Crafted in Switzerland by our artisans, the Toile de Jouy collection embodies that special emotion we associate with objects we cherish, give and pass on.
Carole Hubscher, President of Caran d’Ache
WHERE WRITING MEETS EMOTION
Some instruments accompany the act of writing; others stir emotion at first sight. This Prestige Edition is the embodiment of both. Crafted and assembled by hand over almost 300 hours, it bears the imprint of time, patience and the artisan’s touch. Just ten pieces in each body colour are made to order and individually numbered, preserving the deeply exclusive nature of this creation.
GENEVA IN GOLD LACE
The meticulously polished black or burgundy Chinese lacquer body is adorned with an intricately crafted cage plated in 18-carat gold, as delicate as gold lace. The scenes are no longer simply drawn: they seem to emerge from the material itself. Clouds, gardens and architectural silhouettes take shape through an interplay of light and shadow. The contrast between the depth of the lacquer and the radiance of the gold creates a design of almost textile-like delicacy, with reliefs that invite both the eye and the touch.
A SIGNATURE BUTTON
Inspired by the dome of the greenhouses at Geneva’s Botanical Garden, the button is reinterpreted as a piece of miniature architecture. Its 18-carat gold-plated structure is set with a hand-polished natural stone cabochon. Garnet, onyx or tiger’s eye: each stone reveals its own nuances, depth and interplay of light, lending every instrument a precious individuality. A distinctive detail conceived as a fine-jewellery signature.
METICULOUS CRAFTSMANSHIP AT EVERY STAGE
AN ANCESTRAL SAVOIR-FAIRE
The depth of genuine Chinese lacquer is the result of patient craftsmanship. Derived from the sap of the lacquer tree, it is applied by hand in around ten successive layers by the Maison’s Master lacquerers, custodians of an ancestral savoir-faire. With each application, the colour gains intensity and the material greater depth, gradually revealing its full richness.
RADIANCE REVEALED BY THE ARTISAN’S TOUCH
A long and meticulous process, polishing demands time, precision and mastery. Guided by the artisan’s hand and expert eye, the surface is patiently worked until it achieves a perfectly even lustre. Only then does the Chinese lacquer reveal the full depth of its reflections.
A CREATION SHAPED BY EXCELLENCE
Intricately cut out, the cage reveals itself detail by detail. Every opening demands a gesture of extreme precision to preserve the delicacy of the design and the balance of its proportions. This subtle craftsmanship gives rise to an meticulously crafted structure in which the material itself seems to recede, allowing the motif to emerge.
GEM-SETTING AS THE FINAL FLOURISH
At the top of the instrument, each cabochon is precisely set within the architectural structure of the button. This precious detail provides the finishing touch, further enhancing the creation’s elegance. More than an ornament, the stone affirms the unique character of each piece.
THREE STONES, THREE CHARACTERS
Hand-polished, each cabochon reveals unique nuances and reflections. The vibrant warmth of tiger’s eye, the fiery tones of garnet and the deep black of onyx lend each creation a distinctive personality.
GENEVA, ENGRAVED IN FILIGREE
LIMITED EDITION
The story of Geneva continues through a second interpretation of Toile de Jouy. In this Edition, limited to 60 pieces, the hand-drawn scenes are engraved directly into the material. Across the body and cap, the finely executed guillochage captures the most intricate details of the design, enhanced by pearlescent burgundy lacquer. As the light shifts, every line comes to life, tracing the contours of Geneva.
EXACTING SAVOIR-FAIRE
THE INTENSITY OF THE LACQUER
Through a succession of precise gestures, the artisan polishes the surface until a perfectly even lustre is achieved. This delicate process reveals the subtle pearlescence of the burgundy lacquer: the colour gains depth while delicate reflections bring the body of the instrument to life.
THE FINESSE OF THE GUILLOCHAGE
The Toile de Jouy motif is engraved with extreme precision onto the brass body and cap. Beneath the lacquer, the guillochage reveals the gold-plated finish, highlighting the remarkable level of detail within the design.
PRECISION AT EVERY STAGE
At every stage of its creation, each piece undergoes meticulous inspection. From the very first gesture to the final finishing touches, the artisan’s expert eye ensures the precision of every detail.
