Mario Botta and Fixpencil, the authentic partnership
An aficionado of Caran d’Ache writing instruments, the world-renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta has made the Fixpencil his daily companion. An extension of his own hand, the legendary mechanical pencil faithfully reproduces every line sketched by the famous architect. The authenticity of this partnership is the inspiration behind the new creative encounter between the Geneva-based company and the master architect, giving the Fixpencil a new lease of life.
Respecting the stylistic identity of the Fixpencil, Mario Botta has chosen to emphasise its hexagonal design. His taste for simple and easily identifiable forms has given rise to a “chessboard” pattern. The black and white rectangles juxtaposed on each side immediately draw the eye to the pencil’s hexagonal shape. Faithful to the technicality of the Fixpencil, Mario Botta has given the pattern an additional function: it can be used to take measurements as five adjacent rectangles are equivalent to 1 cm.
The Fixpencil Mario Botta is made from light, resistant aluminium. It is available in two versions, the first presenting black checks on a white background and the other with white checks on a black background. The architect’s signature appears on the body of the instrument. The original graphite B lead is accompanied by four brightly-coloured water-soluble leads. An architectural-style hexagonal box enhanced with a touch of Caran d’Ache red serves as a gift box and, when open, as a pencil box. It further highlights the design and symbolism of the famous writing and drawing instrument.
