The holiday season is the perfect time to try new DIY craft tutorials and personalize your seasonal decorations together as a family. Glass candle jars, customized labels and festive garlands - here are three DIY Christmas craft ideas for your tree, your gifts or your festive table settings. Hang up your stockings and put up your wreath on the front door, get out your Advent calendar and let your creativity run free with Caran d’Ache.

1. GLASS CANDLE JARS FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS TABLE

Have you run out of ideas when it comes to decorating your festive holiday table? Making your own Christmas decorations is an easy family activity you can do with your children. All you need is a little imagination and some leftover craft supplies to brighten up your home with seasonal cheer.

Personalizing glass candle jars with Christmas colors is a perfect way to bring a warm and bright touch to your table, among the pinecones and the fir branches. To celebrate the holiday period, Caran d'Ache has once again partnered with the artist Steffie Brocoli to bring you a totally unique and creative DIY craft idea.

What you’ll need for this Christmas craft activity:

• Glass jars
Acrylic paint (red, green and white)
• Paint sponge
• Masking or painter's tape
• A pair of scissors
• A scalpel or a needle
• Tealights

Instructions:

Cut out simple shapes in the painter's tape to create patterns: triangles for Christmas trees, dots, stripes or rectangles for snowflakes, and stick them all around the glass jars.
Soak the paint sponge in paint and gently press all over the jars. Then take away the tape with the needle before the paint dries.
Top tip: If the paint has smudged in some places under the tape, gently scratch it off with a scalpel or utility knife.

Place a tealight inside the pot to create a warm Christmas atmosphere, and voilà! Your homemade candle jars are ready!

Top tip: Once the festive season is over, soak the pots in warm water to remove the paint. You will then be able to reuse the pots and let your imagination run free!

2. A PERSONALIZED LABEL FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS

Would you like to add a personal touch to your festive table or to your Christmas gifts? Make personalized paper labels that will impress your guests. A new and easy craft idea that is easy-to-do and requires few supplies.
Re-use! Keep gift labels from one year to another to avoid wasting paper.

What you'll need for this DIY Christmas craft activity:

• Thick paper or cardstock, cardboard, kraft paper or pre-cut blank labels
• A graphite pencil
Fibralo Brush felt-tip pens (in Golden Ochre and black, for example)
• String or ribbon
• A pair of scissors
• A hole puncher

Instructions:

Cut out rectangles in the cardboard and snip off the top corners.
Draw a pattern on the label (you could use stencils here): Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas baubles, pinecones, snowflakes… or let your imagination take over!
Write the name of the person receiving the gift and wish them a Merry Christmas.
Punch a hole in a corner of the label. Thread a piece of string or ribbon through the hole.
Fasten the labels to your Christmas gifts with a piece of sticky tape or masking tape.

3. A GARLAND FOR THE TREE

Are you looking for an idea for fun craft activity to do with your kids? How about making a garland or bunting for your tree, to hang among the baubles, or you could even hang it on the wall. Your garland will easily find a place in your home. This fun DIY craft idea lets the kids join in the fun of decorating the house for Christmas and they will be delighted to add their personal touch!

For this Christmas craft activity you'll need:

• Thick paper, cardstock or cardboard (the paper must be thick enough not to warp or buckle when the paint is applied)
• A length of string or ribbon
• A pair of scissors
• A graphite pencil
• Paintbrushes
Gouache paints in a variety of colors
Felt-tip pens (to draw in the details)

Optional:

• Dried orange slices
• Wooden beads

Instructions:

Trace patterns onto the cardboard with your graphite pencil : a Christmas tree, snowman, snowflake, star, Santa Claus, holly, a gingerbread man etc.
Paint the patterns and add details with a marker (snowman's arms, fir branches, etc.).
Cut out the motif once the paint is dry.
Punch a hole at the top of each cutout, and thread a piece of string through it. Make sure that your garland is long enough to fit around the Christmas tree. You’ll probably need around 1 meter (3 feet) of string to hang up 10 or so shapes. Alternate the patterns and put them on the string, add wooden beads, or dried orange slices, if you like.
Hint: Use a needle to thread the patterns onto the string.
Hang your garland on your tree, up your staircase or on your kids' bedroom wall.
